The main target of the diesel locomotive of this series is a working with cargo warehouses with a total weight norm of 4,000-6,000 tons.
Diesel locomotives of the 2TE10 series with the index “U” are the last generation of this model, which had a number of structural changes and refinements, namely, modernized and improved electrical circuits, modernized diesel 10D100M with a number of improvements in the main parameters of operation, modernized refrigerating chamber, more successful location of power and auxiliary equipment, practically unified bodies and trolleys with diesel locomotives of the 2ТЕ116 series and others.
All the main equipment is located in a wagon-type body with the main frame of the supporting structure. The body of each section of the diesel locomotive is conventionally divided into four parts – the control cabin, the body above the hardware chambers, the body above the diesel generator, the body above the refrigerating chamber.
Sections of the diesel locomotive are connected to each other by auto-couplings, and to ensure the transition of locomotive crews from section to section, they are equipped with transitional vestibules.
The control cabins have reliable and multi-layered sound and heat insulation, the front and side windows are glazed with multi-layered glass, there are hatches for airing and ventilation.
The control cabins have a basic configuration and are equipped with a speedometer, safety devices and automatic locomotive signaling of continuous operation, LED lighting lamps, comfortable seats with adjustments.
As a power plant, each section of the diesel locomotive is equipped with a 10-cylinder diesel generator type 10D100 with a total capacity of 2206 kW (3000 hp), consisting of a two-stroke diesel engine 10DN20.7/2×25.4 with gas turbine inflation and a direct current traction generator GP -311B, mounted on one under the diesel frame and interconnected by a semi-rigid coupling.
During 2022-2023 the diesel locomotive underwent a full overhaul in accordance with the current instructions and rules for diesel locomotives of this series, namely:
– complete overhaul of diesel engines of both sections with the replacement of most spare parts and components with new ones, including the connecting rod-piston group (crankshaft bearing liners, pistons, piston rings, cylinder liners), as well as the installation of new assemblies and units, such as exhaust collectors, turbochargers and others;
– complete overhaul of traction electric motors ED118 with replacement of armature windings, main and additional poles, repair of frames, repair of collectors by grinding and roading, replacement of anchor bearings and brush holders. Carrying out work on bench testing of traction motors under load.
– complete overhaul of the main generator and auxiliary electric machines with repair of anchors, poles, replacement of bearings and brush holders;
– complete overhaul of the chassis, namely, repair of trolley frames, brake-lever transmission, brake cylinders, hydraulic shock absorbers, etc. with the replacement of all necessary spare parts and accessories;
– complete identification of wheel pairs with tire turning and revision of axle assemblies of the 2nd volume in accordance with the requirements of the instructions VND32.0.07-001-2001 and CТ-0165;
– complete repair of brake and pneumatic equipment in accordance with the requirements of the instruction СТ-0058;
– external inspection and hydraulic testing of air tanks in accordance with the requirements of the instruction CT-CV-CL-CP-0050;
– replacement of electrical wiring, repair and partial replacement with new electrical wiring equipment, complete repair and restoration of the main and auxiliary control panels;
– complete overhaul with replacement of insulation and internal lining of walls and ceiling made of high-quality corrugated aluminum, moldings, plinths and other decorative elements in the control cabin.
In addition, work was carried out on the overhaul of the roof elements of both sections using new metal structures, overhaul of body strips, decorative strips and linings, production of new exhaust pipes with filter meshes, production of a new set of winter covers for the shaft of the refrigerating device, straightening and overhaul – restoration work on the repair of road sweepers.
In June 2022 was studied the actual technical condition of the load-bearing metal structures of the diesel locomotive (body frames and carts frames) was conducted by specialists of the NDKTI UZ branch with the aim of extending the service life. Based on the results of the inspection, a conclusion was made regarding the extension of the diesel locomotive’s service life by 6 years, it’s until 2028.

A new lead-acid starter type 32ТN-550Sа+ U2 produced by the Vladar plant, Kharkiv, was installed on the diesel locomotive
Тhe locomotive passed full rheostat tests at the rheostat station of the locomotive depot named after T. Shevchenko of the Odesa Railway branch of JSC “Ukrzaliznytsia”. The diesel locomotive was run-in on the approach tracks of the T. Shevchenko locomotive depot of the Odesa Railway branch of JSC “Ukrzaliznytsia”. It is completely ready for use.
Before carrying out the complete external and internal painting of the locomotive, work was carried out on the complete removal of the old paint coating (up to the metal) by the method of complex sandblasting with the achievement of the overall cleanliness of the body surface at the level between SA1 and SA2 according to the international standard ISO 8501-1.
Complete external and internal painting of the locomotive with high-tech and expensive paint materials of the German brand Lankwitzer Gmbh was carried out in accordance with the selected color palette and painting scheme. Selected transport and signaling shades from the palette of the RAL K7 Lankwitzer catalog, namely: the main color of the diesel locomotive is RAL 5005 – signal blue, which is harmoniously combined with the color of the roof RAL 7042 – transport gray. The tandem of two colors is succinctly emphasized by a strip along the entire body line in the color RAL 1023 – transport yellow. The crew part is painted in practical black color RAL 9004 – signal black. The image is completed by frontal signal overlays, which are pulled into fluorescent light reflective film of the type Oracal 326 Signalrot.
